1. Plan Ahead, but Stay Flexible
While it’s important to have an itinerary, leave room for spontaneity. Overloading your schedule can lead to exhaustion, so balance planned activities with downtime to explore or relax.
Be prepared for unexpected changes—whether it’s a flight delay or a hidden gem you discover along the way.
Generally, I always plan a few extra minutes (or more depending on location and situation) so that running late does not directly affect all your plans. This is especially important for fix activities/appointments, such as flights, ferries, or dinners at fully booked restaurants.
Once you have a moment and reflect on a day of traveling or at your destination, you will feel far better when you did everything in a more relaxed and stress free way.
2. Pack Smart and Light
Less is more when it comes to packing. Stick to versatile clothing items that can be mixed and matched, and prioritize comfort over style. Use packing cubes to organize your belongings and maximize space (I know, this is a highly discussed topic, but unless you pack like a pro anyways, packing cubes will help a lot). Don’t forget essentials like your crucial medication, a charger plus cable, a travel-size toiletry kit, and a small first-aid kit.
When your airline status or your booking class allow for more suitcases, it’s tempting to go wild with packing too much. I did this many times. But traveling with less items (and less suitcases) makes your whole journey – from leaving your door to arriving at your hotel – far more enjoyable and easy.
Plus, you won’t be overwhelmed what to wear at your destination because you brought your entire wardrobe….
3. Keep Important Documents Handy
Store all essential documents, such as your passport, ID, travel insurance, and tickets, in a secure yet accessible location. Make digital copies and email them to yourself as a backup. A waterproof folder or travel wallet can help keep everything organized and protected. Today, there are also some more stylish options available. If that still sounds too unsexy for you, at least make sure you follow at least the rest of this advice.
4. Research Your Destination
Before you arrive, familiarize yourself with local customs, transportation options (is walking an option? what about taxis or Uber?), and must-see attractions.
Learn a few basic phrases in the local language to help with communication and show respect for the culture.
Understanding the local currency, exchange rates, and generally accepted payment options (cash, credit cards…) will also come in handy.
Personally, I love exploring restaurants. So I will always do a thorough research in advance and either book dinners myself or – if I stay at a hotel with a good concierge – ask them to do it. And to be prepared, I also look for information about tipping.
5. Prioritize Health and Safety
Traveling can expose you to new environments and germs, so prioritize your health always and every time. Stay hydrated, carry hand sanitizer, and pack any medications you might need. If traveling internationally, check vaccination requirements and bring a small medical kit with basics like pain relievers and band-aids.
Furthermore, you should always make sure to have insurance coverage while traveling.
6. Stay Connected Without Overpacking Tech
While technology can enhance your trip, avoid overpacking gadgets.
A smartphone with essential travel apps (like maps, translation tools, and transportation guides) is often enough. Most devices also take great pictures and videos. If you like traveling with a dedicated camera, make sure you are really going to use it (and the equipment you bring). A few times, I brought my full-frame camera, three lenses, a tripod, a drone and in the end mainly used my iPhone.
Today, I only use my phone, the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 for videos and a newly purchased Ricoh GR III for photos. This is still more than most people might need but nonetheless a powerful but light and small set-up for photo/video enthusiasts.
Carry a portable charger/power bank to keep your devices powered on the go, and bring an international power adapter (ideally also with USB/USB-C ports).
You should also consider an international SIM card or roaming plan if needed. Nowadays, everyone and everything is reliant on your phone’s connectivity. And while at a hotel or mall you should have wifi access, more often than not you will find yourself in a situation where you have to purchase expensive data volume.
7. Book Accommodations Wisely
Choose lodging that fits your travel style and budget. Read reviews to ensure it meets your needs, whether it’s proximity to attractions, family-friendly amenities, or a quiet retreat. Consider alternative options like vacation rentals or boutique hotels for a unique experience.
8. Embrace Minimalism in Souvenir Shopping
Instead of buying bulky items, opt for small, meaningful souvenirs like postcards, local spices, or handmade jewelry. Consider experiences as souvenirs—a cooking class or a guided tour can leave lasting memories without adding weight to your luggage.
And take as many pictures and videos as possible (as memory and kind of souvenir).
Always. Everywhere.
Worst thing that can happen is that you might not need certain photos afterwards. But you will never be able to re-produce those same moments. So capturing them on your camera or phone will at least give you the opportunity to re-live a few highlights.
9. Prepare for the Unexpected
Travel comes with its share of surprises. Pack a small emergency fund in cash, carry a photocopy of your passport, and know how to contact your country’s embassy if needed. Travel insurance can provide peace of mind by covering unexpected medical expenses, trip cancellations, or lost luggage.
Here, it may be wise to book flights, rental cars and hotels with a credit cards that provides additional insurance coverage. This can apply to lost or damaged luggage, delays causing late arrival and much more.
And try to always stay calm and mindful. Things can go wrong or take an unexpected turn. Just embrace this fact, then you will most certainly still have an amazing time.
10. Stay Present and Enjoy the Journey
It’s easy to get caught up in capturing the perfect photo or rushing from one activity to the next. Remember to pause and savor the moment. Engage with locals, try new foods, and immerse yourself in the culture. Sometimes, the best travel memories come from the simplest experiences.
I really love to sit down in a local café, have an espresso, relax, and watch what’s going on. This has given me so many impressions over the past years. It also helps to reflect and simply enjoy time at a specific place. Having small rituals on your trips can help immensely for stress free travel.
