The 3 Things a Beginner Actually Needs in Their Golf Bag (And What to Skip)

When we first started our golf journey this season, the sheer volume of equipment available was completely overwhelming. Walk into any golf pro shop, and you are instantly surrounded by €500+ drivers, high-tech swing trackers, and endless accessories.

As a beginner, there is a massive temptation to buy everything in hopes that it will magically fix your swing and instantly making you a better golfer. But honestly (and it took some time to admit), most of it is completely unnecessary until you have a few seasons under your belt.

In the spirit of keeping things curated and practical, we’ve filtered out the noise. If you are just starting out, here are the only three beginner golf bag essentials —and a few expensive things you should definitely skip.

1. A Complete Beginner Club Set

The biggest mistake you can make as a beginner (which we actually did and became very frustrated) is trying to piece together a golf bag club-by-club. Not only is it stressful trying to understand shafts and lofts, but it is also incredibly expensive. And you most probably won’t easily get everything you want, as especially irons normally only come as sets.

The solution: buy a complete “box set”. These sets are specifically engineered for beginners, meaning the club faces are highly forgiving (so the ball still goes straight even if you don’t hit it perfectly). Once you outgrow them in one or a few years, they hold great resale value.

2. A Budget-Friendly Rangefinder

You might think a rangefinder is only for the pros, but knowing the exact distance to the flag actually speeds up your game and builds your confidence. While we felt initially awkward using one as total beginners, it turned out to be a game-changer we can’t imagine playing without. However, you absolutely do not need to spend €300+ on a premium brand name right now.

  • My Top Pick: REDTIGER Laser Rangefinder
  • Why it works: It’s sleek, highly accurate, and currently costs under €120. It is easily the best value-for-money gadget for your bag right now.

3. The Right Consumables (Balls & Tees)

Let’s be brutally honest: as a beginner, you are going to lose golf balls. A lot of them. Do not play with premium €60-a-box golf balls; it will only make you stressed every time you step up to a water hazard! Grab a bulk box of affordable soft-feel balls and a bag of durable wooden tees, and you are set for the season.

  • Our Top Picks: Titleist Tour Soft 2024 (I’m using the 2026 version, but the older one is cheaper right now) and Srixon Soft Feel Lady for golf balls and THESE golf tees (they come in different lengths).
  • Alternative: Callaway also has an amazing, high-quality beginner ball with the Supersoft, but the Titleist and Srixon are the two we personally use, and we are extremely happy with them.

3 Expensive Things You Should Skip

To keep your budget intact and your frustration low, here is what you should definitely leave on the store shelf for now:

  1. Premium Titleist Pro V1 Golf Balls (or Taylormade TP5): At €5 or more a ball, losing one hurts. And you are going to lose many balls in the beginning. Stick to the budget balls (for now).
  2. Specialized Wedges: High-lofted wedges are incredibly difficult to hit cleanly. The wedge that comes with your beginner set is all you need right now.
  3. GPS Golf Watches: A distraction when you are just trying to learn basic mechanics. A simple rangefinder is much more practical. However, if you already own a smartwatch and like using it, you could consider downloading one of the many Golf GPS apps (our favorite is Golfshot) but simply for measuring your distance to the hole (ignore the other features).

Why Keeping Your Beginner Golf Bag Essentials Simple Matters

Golf is a beautiful, challenging sport, but you don’t need a heavy bag full of expensive gear to enjoy a weekend afternoon on the fairway. It’s absolutely tempting with all the amazing equipment out there. But keep your bag light, pack only the essentials, and focus on enjoying the learning process!
